Engagement

The second letter in the PERMA model (Seligman, 2012) is E, for “Engagement.” This aspect of PERMA includes the concept of “Flow,” and the two terms  are often used in conjunction to describe this element. See the infographics below on engagement/flow and how to achieve this state through daily activities!

Humans get into a state of flow when the challenge of an activity appears right at the edge of our abilities, which  elicits a feeling of full immersion and absorption into the activity. This is described as “full mental engagement, a state of concentration so focused that it amounts to absolute absorption in an activity.”

Here are some examples for how to invite engagement/flow:

  • Exercising & sports

  • Meditation & yoga

  • Art & creativity

  • Writing & journaling

  • Partaking in competitive scenes

  • Occupying hobbies

  • Engagement in school/workplace tasks

Being able to find activities that bring you into a state of flow will allow for more positive well being and flourishing. We encourage you to try some of these examples!
