Relationships

The third letter in the PERMA model (Seligman, 2012) is R, for “Relationships.” Relationships can range from interactions with partners, family members, friends, co-workers, and the community at large! Relationships are included in the PERMA model due to growing evidence that human beings are inherently very social, and have strong desires for positive social connections. In the PERMA model, relationships embody connections that elicit feelings of being loved, supported, and valued by others.

Here are some ways in which you can build relationships:

  1. Show interest! This can look like making an effort to ask someone about their life and showing interest in knowing more about them. You never know what you may have in common with someone!

  2. Maintain connection. Make time to reach out and connect with existing friends and acquaintances. Set aside some time to meet with old friends and catch up! Send a text to someone you may have lost touch with due to a busy schedule.

  3. Leave your comfort zone! Commit to meeting new people by joining classes or groups that meet regularly. Sign up for a cooking class, dance class, or book club! Bonding over similar hobbies and passions is a great way to build positive relationships.
